Conservation & Permaculture
RFOF is currently working with the Natural Resource Conservation Service to increase conservation practices on our farm. In 2016, 150 Chestnut Oaks & Pecan trees, 200 Persimmon & Pawpaw trees, & 300 Raspberry brambles, in addition to, a 30' x 1500' pollinator strip were added to our north border.
We added 2 rotational grazing pastures for our cows. Our herd rotates each week to insure fresh pasture and even fertilization throughout the year. The herd is split in the spring, the younger heifers are moved to our hillside grazing area to maximize forage availability and to regulate our calving season.
In 2018, 9 acres of crop and pasture land was cover cropped with a winter rye, clover, vetch, winter pea mix last fall. We cover crop year round to preserve and add fertility to our fields. Each season, we continue to add asparagus crowns to our asparagus patch.
In 2019, we continue to add permaculture features as we tend to the soil, riparian zones, pastures and woodlands here on the farm. This spring in addition to seeding for our produce season, we are focusing on propagating our elderberry bushes, blueberries and raspberries.
